Dartmouth Health, in partnership with the Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth has launched the 3D Scholars Program, a new, one-year certificate course designed to equip practicing clinicians with the skills and knowledge to excel in medical device development and leadership. Fogarty Innovation is a partner in the program, participating as an extramural advisor and as the host of a multi-day retreat focused on innovation in Silicon Valley.  Applications for participation are open now in preparation for the commencement of the inaugural program in September of this year.

The 3D Scholars Program is an opportunity for clinicians to delve into the complexities of medical device innovation. Through a series of retreats held in key medical and technological hubs—including Dartmouth College, Washington, D.C., and Minneapolis-St. Paul in addition to the Silicon Valley—participants gain insights into device design, regulatory policies, start-up culture, and manufacturing practices. The program culminates with scholars presenting their capstone projects at Dartmouth College.

“By empowering clinicians to bridge the gap between medical practice and device development, the 3D Scholars Program represents the next step in Dartmouth’s commitment to advancing innovation in healthcare,” said Aaron V. Kaplan, MD, FACC, FNAI, founding director of the Dartmouth Device Development (3D) Symposium and co-leader of the 3D Scholars Program. “By fostering a deep understanding of the development process, we prepare scholars to lead the way in creating transformative medical technologies.”

Eligible candidates include active clinicians in device-focused specialties such as interventional cardiology, neurosurgery, vascular surgery, orthopedics, and more. Scholars must commit to 100% participation in five retreats, monthly seminars, and individual work. The 3D Initiative is committed to recruiting scholars from diverse backgrounds including physicians from a broad spectrum of specialties and care settings. The program can accommodate 8-12 scholars in its inaugural class.

“We look forward to going deep with these scholars to share the expertise of our veteran staff, provide hands-on opportunities to learn from startups in our development programs, and introduce key innovation partners in Silicon Valley,” said Andrew Cleeland, CEO of Fogarty Innovation. “The program is an exciting extension of the 3D Symposium, an annual event that brings experts from various fields together to discuss shared problems and ideas to improve patient care through technology innovation.” The 3D Symposium has been a premier thought-leadership platform for the medical device community for over two decades.
